A New Way of Doing Business

I read about a young man, Terry Lobell, who was an unemployed mechanic in the United States. He heard people complaining that advertising was expensive. Then he started thinking; if people are saying advertising is expensive, then it is a problem and therefore a need. So he decided to give people advertising at a cheaper rate.

What he did was to mail coupons including the message the company or manufacturer wanted to pass across to the customers. And that was a lot cheaper than advertising in the paper and magazine. His business exploded to the point where he was mailing fifty million pieces of advert per day.  He became a multi-millionaire by solving a problem and making life easier for people.

There was also a young man who sent for a transcript of a TV programme and it took months before he could get it. Then it occurred to him that as popular as the TV programme was, there would be many people who wanted the transcript. But if it would take them months to get it, then it was a problem and a need.

So he did a proposal to the producer of the TV programme, to record the broadcast, transcribe it within one hour and provide it for all the people who need the transcript for a fee and a percentage would be given to the producer of the programme. The producer bought the idea because it took the stress of transcription off them and yet they were going to make money and the young man in business. With time, he was not just producing transcript for one programme, he developed a company that was producing transcripts for many programmes.

For example as a taxi driver, you can offer better quality service. When someone enters your cab, you open the door for them and give the person a one-minute brief. You greet the customer, tell him it is your pleasure to take him or her on this trip, and if traffic was normal you envisage the trip will take ‘X’ amount of minutes. “I have a selection of musical tapes and CDs here (classical, religious, Fuji etc), if you tell me what your preference is, I will slot it in for you, but if you do not want any music I will switch it off. Also if you like for me to chat with you, I will be willing to do so, but if you want me to keep quiet, for you to have the time to think it would be my pleasure to do that as well. Please find a selection of today’s papers by your side; you may like to go through it. I just want to make you feel as comfortable as possible on this trip.”

Then you give the person a nice ride. As you get to the intended destination, you hand the customer a business card for him to call you the next time he needs someone to pick him or her somewhere. That really will make a difference and also go a long way.

You should look at the same problems others are also looking at but think commerce and think differently from others.

If God has given you grace to start a bank, then start a bank. The new generation banks did and beat the old generation banks to it. We used to collect tallies in banks before. If you were going to collect your salary, you would have to dedicate the whole day to do that. In fact you could be tempted to take your mat and pillow. It was very normal for people to doze in banks. Then the new generation banks came and said five minutes and you are out. Of course everyone left for the new generation banks.

At home, I want you to make a list of everything in your sitting room. Look through the list and write down how these things can be manufactured in a better way. That is how to get your brain to start working. Everybody sees the problem but we are asking entrepreneurs in Nigeria to begin to see the solution.

Go beyond selling, let your customers experience a nice time when they patronize you. Let them enjoy the time they spend with you and you will see them coming back, time and time again.

Money is important for effective living; nothing can take the place of money in the area in which money works. KEY 1: BELIEVE YOU ARE WEALTHY!

A.True wealth actually starts from the inside out.

It is first within then without. You cannot prosper beyond the level of development that has taken place inside of you. You become wealthy when you believe that you have the ability to become wealthy. All things are possible to him that believes. What you believe determines what you do. You will always take actions that will turn your belief into reality.

To acquire the money desired, you must believe that you have the God-given ability to make money. When you believe that you can make money, you will begin to do the things that will attract money, rather than give excuses.

B. Believe there is no shortage of money around you.

If you believe that money is in short supply, you must correct that impression immediately. God created everything in abundance, if there is any shortage it is artificial. Break free from the ‘not enough’ mentality; develop the ‘more than enough’ mentality. You have all that you need. Get rid of scarcity mentality; develop abundance mentality.

Brian Tracy, inspirational speaker and author says “we live in an abundant universe in which there is sufficient money for all who really want it and are willing to obey the laws governing its acquisition.” There is no real shortage; plenty of money is available to you.

C. You deserve to be rich

Settle it once and for all; God wants you to prosper financially. You deserve to be financially blessed as much as anybody else. Those who are rich around you are not necessarily men and women of extraordinary intelligence; they are essentially just like you. Since God has done it for them, He will do it for you also.

D. Develop a correct mindset about money

To achieve financial freedom, you must develop a correct mindset about money. Some say that the bible says “money is the root of all evil”. Nothing could be further from the truth. The bible actually says that the love of money is the root of all evil. Actually, money does many good things; it puts food on our table, clothes on our back, roofs over our head and much more.

Once again, let this sink deep into your heart, money is not the root of all evil, in my estimation, the lack of money is the root of most evils.

E. Believe not that all rich people are evil

Do not make the mistake of believing that those who have a lot of money are evil and nasty. As long as you believe that, you will repel money especially if you believe that you are a good person. Celebrate those who have made their money legitimately. Their breakthrough is a confirmation that your own is on the way.

F. Decide to be wealthy!

The next thing you must do is to decide to become wealthy. A Nigerian proverb says, “If you pound yam on fresh leaves, and prepare the soup in small groundnut shells, the person that will be satisfied will still be satisfied.” That means that however scarce money is, some people will still be rich. I said to myself some years ago, that if our country’s yam is pounded in leaves, and its soup is prepared in tiny groundnut shells, I will be satisfied. That point of decision was where things began to change. It is now your turn. Everything you need is around you. Just believe, because what you believe is what you become.

G. Change who you are

I talked extensively about this process of transformation in my latest book, Success Is Who You Are. I mentioned in it that the difference between the rich and the poor is not essentially in what they have, it is not even in what they do; it is in who they are. Being must precede doing. It is who you are at the core of your heart that determines the direction of your life. As a man thinks in his heart so is he. Like a sage said, “the heart of the matter is the matter of the heart”. You see, the journey from rags to riches is an internal trip. To have what the rich have, you must first become who they are then you must do what they do.

At the core of your being are your thoughts. You are literarily what you think. To change who you are, change your thoughts. Think like the rich then talk like the rich. When you alter your thoughts, you alter your life.

DISCOVER YOUR PURPOSE

Every day we wake up and get set to go out. Some people get ready to go to work, school, a meeting or an appointment.
There is one movement or the other everywhere you go. People are in frenzy; they are  literally taking to their heels. Everybody is in a hurry to get to some place. Where?
The big question however is: how many people really know where they are going in life?
Every journey must have a destination. Life is a journey. Before God allowed us to be   born into this world, He made a plan for our lives. This shows that every single person has a purpose for being alive, but not everyone discovers that purpose. So it is left to you to discover your purpose by asking God who created you and sent you here.
The discovery of God’s purpose is the foundation for successful living and this discovery yields certain benefits.
Purpose gives direction: It inspires us to dream of our destination in life and we only   travel on the road that leads to that destination. When you do not know where you are   going, anyone is free to direct you and any path can take you anywhere. But a sense of  purpose tells you which way to go or not to go.
Purpose launches us on a crusade: Each of us is born to solve a problem. Purpose gives us a cause for which we can be willing to live and die.  It helps us to live a life of contribution. If you are not living for something, you can die for anything. When you    discover the purpose for which you are on earth, you cannot die anyhow. Death only respects the man that knows his purpose for being alive.
Purpose guarantees our ultimate success: “For we know that all things work together for good for them that love God, who are called according to his purpose.”  Provision, protection and divine assistance are guaranteed when we are carrying out God’s assignment for our lives. Your purpose determines the resources you need per time. The reason why you are not getting some things could be because it is not in line with your purpose or it is not time yet. Many years ago, I wanted so desperately to leave the country to supposedly “greener pastures.” I tried all I could but I was denied visa, even to Kenya. Others would have thought it was the work of the enemy or enemies, but now I know it was simply not time yet for me to travel out.
Purpose makes it easier for us to make choices in life: Once you discover your  destination, making decisions on your career, choice of life partner and location becomes easier.
Purpose breeds confidence: Discovery of purpose reveals who we are. It enhances your esteem. It helps us realize that we are not inferior to others, we are only different. When you know your purpose, you will not compare yourself to others. “For we dare not class ourselves or compare ourselves with those who commend themselves. But they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.”
Purpose breeds persistence: Knowing that our success is ultimately guaranteed by God who makes us to hold on in the face of adversity. We realize that negative circumstances are always temporary.
Purpose makes us original: When we are left to ourselves, we usually imitate others.
The discovery of purpose puts us in a class of our own. God specializes in making originals and not duplicates.
Finally purpose keeps you alive: Once God shows you your destination in life, it is inevitable you will arrive there, if you do not give up. Several attempts were made on the life of Christ. But he escaped, because he was destined only to die on the cross.

Discover your purpose and you will be on the path of success!

The Best Way to Make Money! 

If you have read and understood “The best way to see money” and you have chosen that way, the next thing on your mind should be “The best way to make money.”

If you want to make money, you need to ask yourself some questions.

“What is the population of the city or town where I reside?”

“How much does the average person spend on food?” Then multiply the two. Can you see how much money is spent on food on an average day in your city?

Take Lagos for example. Let us assume we have a population of 10 million people and the average person spends 150 naira on food in a day. That will come to 1.5 billion naira spent on food every day. Imagine!

When people say there is no money in town, they may not be stating the truth. The truth is that there is money, but they have not been able to see it. Because you do not see money with your eyes, you see it with your mind.

Let us take our illustration a little further. The supposed 10 million people in Lagos need houses to live in. Those houses are built with cement, gravel, sand, iron rods and roofing sheets. These things cost money to buy. But it is those who are selling them that make the money.

Each of the 10 million people puts on at least two pieces of cloth per day. They wear 10 million pairs of shoes. They brush their teeth everyday with toothbrushes and toothpaste. Most of them use soap for their bath and wash their clothes. May be 70% of them move from one part of the city to the other every day. They sleep on beds which have mattresses, which need bed sheets and pillow cases. The children within the population need to go to school.
Can you see how to make money now?

What you have to do is to solve a particular kind of problem for a fraction of the people in your city; money will flow in your direction. By the way, we describe the money spent in a country as its currency. Currency describes a current or something that flows. Actually, money flows. Each time you spend money, someone makes money. Why not be the one making the money? It is now your turn to prosper. Write down your own goals and pray for God to show you the unique problems you are to solve for people in your city and in this country.

IT IS YOUR TIME!

You will experience a turn-around in your life. What do you like to do? Is it fashion designing, catering, computer programming or teaching? Get the best training you can get. Develop expertise. Then, begin to offer your products or services. It may not work out the way you expected the first time, but with persistence, determination and the
willingness to learn along the way, you will achieve your goals.

Have you observed that rich people do not have two heads? They are people like you whose minds have been trained to see wealth. From today, your mind will not be a liability, it will be an asset. As you take practical steps to sell something or to help somebody, God will help you.

MISTAKES

Another thing you should be mindful of is the fact that you will make mistakes. But do not be afraid, all you need to do is ask God for wisdom and learn from your mistakes.
